MOUNT EDGCUMBE, PLYMOUTH, PRE-WEDDING SHOOT

Last week I had the pleasure of photographing Claire and Rich for their engagement shoot at Mount Edgcumbe in Plymouth, where later on this year I am photographing their wedding. Having never been there before I was pleasantly surprised to find such a grand and great place, the weather was awesome and the ferry ride over was cheap, as good old “groom to be” Rich paid, so a great start.

Mount Edgcumbe House is the former home of the Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, set in Grade I Cornish Gardens on the Rame Peninsula, situated on a hill. After a short boat trip over the River Tamar the experience and setting held a bit of mystery, along with the mist that crept around us all day, which added to the mood.

They are a nice relaxed couple, Rich is in the Forces and is away quite a lot, so when he’s around and back from duty they try and cram in as much wedding organisation as possible, which, on this day included a pre-wedding engagement shoot with me.

Not short of photogenic places to shoot in the grounds, we ventured into the big country house like three excited children from an Enid Blyton novel. Apart from getting some nice pictures for the couple to have, my aim on the day was to try and get them to relax in front of the camera, and warm to me. So I don’t appear on their wedding day a daunting, intimidating figure to overcome, like a dentist holding a big drill at their wedding day door.

We went into a room which had a grand piano, I got Claire to sit on the seat and pretend to bash out a song or two, with a crazed look on her face, this was to try and get them to lose a few inhabitions they may have in front of the camera, a hard thing to do, as only just meeting, but Claire, to be fair, did brilliantly, and set us all up for a great wedding day shoot.

Claire and Rich soon became more relaxed with being photographed, and I finally felt we had cracked the “I’m a photographer” and “you’re a couple getting married” thing as they sat on the grand stairs of the house.

Had a really nice time with them, and I’m very much looking forward to their wedding in September, let’s hope the weather on the day does the couple and Mount Edgcumbe justice. 🙂
