I had never set foot in Dartington Hall before this engagement shoot, and when I did I was well impressed, bags of photo opportunities for Ruth and Ronnie, the couple whose pre-shoot it was. They are getting married there in early January, and I can’t wait after seeing the place.
There is a quad in the middle of it, with beautiful buildings all around, and a reception room where I imagined Lords and Ladies at a huge banquet hundreds of years ago, ripping off chicken legs with their teeth, red wine everywhere and folk dancing on tables! A good choice by the couple for a wedding venue.
I’ve known Ronnie from my photojournalism days, he is the press officer for the British Army in the South West, so our paths have crossed with newspaper dealings.
Both Ruth and Ronnie are getting ready at Dartington Hall, so my second photographer will follow the groom, while I shadow Ruth in the morning. It’s going to get dark pretty early because of the time of year, but I actually like winter weddings, the light is crisp and sharp, and I can also use some off the camera flash photography, with the help of my second snapper.
