My first wedding of the year took me to Dartington Hall in Devon, for the happy day of Ruth and Ronnie, on a crisp January morning.
The weather was far from kind first thing, and so much so the biggest clap of thunder roared right over the top of Dartington Hall, it felt like we had been struck by lightning, I wouldnt lie to you it scared me, I heard that groom Ronnie and his best man Dave at the time who were outside under shelter when it happened hugged, theres a picture opportunity right there 🙂
All the power went off in the room Ruth was getting ready in, so an exciting start to the day. I could start to see the questions arriving on Ruths face, “How are we supposed to get pictures in that?”, but I quickly reasureed her that all you need is ten minutes of being clear from rain, and you can duck out to get some pictures, but even I at this stage was thinking whether we were going to get that break.
This was the first time I had done wedding photography at Dartington Hall, and I hope there’s much more to come. So many opportunities, little nooks and crannies, big archways and great natural light which poured in from the big reception room, it looked fit for a medieval banquet.
The service was pretty cool, his best man played bass, and there was a nice chilled atmosphere in there. It stopped raining and the sun came out, I ushered them both outside into the quad and the gardens as quick as I possibly could, as I knew this could be our only chance. It went well, thanks to our pre shoot and planning day at Dartington Hall we all new exactly what was going to happen, how long for and when, this is why a planning day is essential, and I do it with every couple I photograph.
The day went quickly, like I find they always do. Ronnie is in a band, and plays the drums, so it was a lovely touch that he played for all his guests at the start of the evening.
I wish them all the luck, a successful day and evening, the food was a bit special too 🙂
