This was my very first wedding of the year, and I couldn’t have asked for a better couple to kick off my season with, Melissa and Darren, who were super , the right sort of bride and groom that suited my style of wedding photography, who basically just let me get on with my job of taking pictures in my reportage style.
“Do you want me to do anything”? Melissa asked me as she was getting ready in the morning, “Nope” I replied quickly, as when you start giving too much direction to couples you lose the moment, and it all gets a bit Freeman’s catalogue. I’m if anything more of a prompter, a suggester, if I see a sexy bit of light gleaming through a window then I may tell them to stand in it, rather than in a dark corner, that sort of thing.
The wedding was at Buckland Tout Saints in the South Hams area of Devon, a really lovely venue, intimate, with around 40 guests to the day, you get a real sense of emotion during the ceremony, there was a lot of poignant stuff going on, Darren and Melissa equally finding the whole moment moving, her dad looked very proud all day, it was a fab wedding to document and record.
I’m back down to Buckland Tout Saints again in a couple of weeks time, and can’t wait. I get booked at the same places frequently, but to me every wedding is totally different, yes the process is the same, but the people, emotions and moments are all truly one off’s and unique, which need capturing and this is why I love shooting weddings and the people involved. I love to just softly scratch away at the surface of every wedding and discover a little bit more than the norm, spontaneous reactions, real honest moments caught in the sincerest of ways, the belly laughs and the tears. I try and get it all.
It helps getting the right brides and grooms, who fit into my style and approach and Melissa and Darren were spot on.
